I'm 30!

Well, today is my 30th birthday! I never would have pictured myself married with three kids and living 1400 miles away from home at 30. Life is certainly full of unexpected things! To honor the closest holiday I decided to make myself a Valentine's birthday cake. It's full of fresh strawberry filling too, yum!

We are officially Sooner's! We spent most of December in a state of chaos, with packing, driving across the country, and waiting around for two days before our stuff made it to our new apartment.

But we've been in our apartment for 3 weeks now and are starting to get back into our normal routine.

Wolf Costume

Tinkerbell, fairy, and Ariel costumes

It's my busy time of year, Halloween is coming and I'm making costumes!

Tinkerbell for our little cousin. The wings turned out terrible, so she'll have to buy some cute ones.

A pretty fairy for my daughter. She's grown out of all her dress up clothes and since my kids play dress up most days, she was suffering. So I decided to make her some cute stuff that she can use for dress up, or Disneyland, or Halloween. This was the same pattern as the Tinkerbell above, but with the jacket and tulle for the pettals. I didn't even bother to make wings this time since the other one's turned out so floppy and terrible. We'll find some at Walmart later.

And I saved my favorite for last! No, not this terrible headless photo. This is her old Ariel costume, the one she grew out of three years ago!

This is the new one, and my favorite! I decided this time to make a skin colored shirt so that she's not so naked. The purple seashell bra is attatched to the shirt and the tail is attatched also. So it's just one long stretchy dress. She has really slimmed down and is starting to look like a big kid!

Star Wars Costumes

We're big Star Wars fans, and the kids wanted to dress up Star Wars themed for Halloween.

I made most of the costume pieces. First I'll show you little Yoda. I made everything except for the slippers.

Next, we have Obi Wan Kenobi. I made all his, except for his boots.

And Padme Amidala. The only parts I made are the silver arm bands, and the boots. The boots need a little help, I'll have to adjust them later on.

They watch Star Wars the Clone Wars all the time, and even love the movies too.

I like orange

One of my favorite things to make are baby blankets. They are smaller and faster to finish than full size blankets, and they are just fun because they are for cute babies. This foux-chinelle blanket was very time consuming, but it turned out so nice.

Start off with 3 layers of flannel and a top layer of whatever print you like. Then sew diagional lines down the whole blanket. Finally you cut thru the flannel layers, making sure to keep the print layer intact. Once you wash it, the flannel frays and becomes soft like chinelle. I love the orange flannel peeking thru the strips.

Here I used a much simpler design, dino dudes knit on one side and orange minky on the other.

It's extra soft and comfy.

Flower Hair Clips

This is a very fun project. Take some taffeta or other polyester dressy fabric and turn it into beautiful flowers. I attatched these to clips and added a sparkly gem to the center.

SuperBaby Onesie

This is an upcycled onesie. It originally had a football on the front, but I covered it up with the super baby logo. I made a red cape and attatched it to the sholders. A simple halloween costume idea.

Flower Onesie Outfit

Here's one of my dyed onesies, this one I added some fabric flowers to the front. I also made a matching skirt. A cute little outfit size 3-6 months.

Baby Rattles

Simple animal baby rattles, one with bunny with floppy ears and one yellow duck. These both have rattles inside and are attatched to a wooden teething ring.

baby towel

My son outgrew the hooded baby towels long ago, so I made him a bigger one out of a regular sized bath towel. I used store bought bias tape for the edge, and added a duck to the hood to match our ducky bathroom.

You can buy these in the store for $15-$20 but I made mine for $6! And I was able to customize it with the colors I wanted to match our bathroom decor.

Graduation Cake

My sister graduated from High School and I decided to make her a cake!

She wanted chocolate cake with chocolate filling. I'm not a big fan of chocolate so I wasn't sure I would like it, but I did!

Purses or Diaper Bags

I made three new bags. Two of them can be used as purses, or as a small diaper bag. I used my heat transfer paper to add classic pooh drawings by the original artist A.A. Milne.

The last one is a diaper bag set, with a changing pad and bib. The inside of the bag is waterproof, and the changing pad is wipeable on both sides.

Crinkle Toys and Rattles

Here is an update on my baby paper. This time I added some ribbons to the sides, because most babies like to play with the loops.

Then I got the idea to make carrots and a cow, and they crinkle too. The sun and monster have rattles inside the stuffing so they make a nice sound when shaken.

Denim Bibs

Most bibs are so frustrating to me because they cover the front of the baby but not the sholders. So when they turn their head they wipe their face all over their sholder. So I made some bibs that are bigger than the standard size. These bibs stick out farther over the sholders to protect more.

I even tried one on my 4 year old and it fit him fine. I made some matching burp rags as well, for spit up or just a slobbery face. They are made of extra soft denim on one side and flannel on the other side.

Heat Transfer shirts

I bought some heat transfer paper and decided to test it out.

First I dyed some onesies so they were not plain white. Then printed out the images I wanted on the transfer paper. Ironed them on and here they are. The fabric dying was the most involved part. I think next time around I'll buy colored shirts and not bother with the dying process. But the heat transfers worked wonderfully!

A New Cinderella dress

Birthday and Going Away Party!

My little girl is 6 now! My goodness how fast the time goes by. We had a birthday party for her at the park this weekend. It was also a going away party because we will be moving to Oklahoma soon! My husband is going to Bible College to become a pastor. This was a good chance to say goodbye and clebrate the birthday at the same time.

More Dr. Seuss

Here are a couple more "Sam I am" things I made for my son. First is his diaper bag. I covered the outside with vinyl so it's wipeable and it will stay white and clean. The inside is a Dr. Seuss print with all the titles of his books.

Next, I took some t-shirts from the 99c store, cut them into rectangles and turned them into...

this "I am Sam" quilt!

The back of the quilt and the pillow case are made from another Dr. Seuss print, with all the characters

Sam-I-Am cake

Happy Birthday to my little boy! He turned ONE today! We had a Sam-I-Am party for him with the family. It's amazing to me how much a baby can learn in just one year.

He went from this little thing that slept all day... to this big boy!

Like I said the theme was Sam-I-Am because he is Sam... well Samuel, but close enough. So I made a small cake for him and a fondant Sam-I-Am for the top, and everyone else enjoyed some yellow cupcakes.

We love reading Dr. Seuss books in this house, and Green Eggs and Ham is my daughters favorite! So to go along with the theme, I made her a Green Eggs and Ham shirt.

I asked for a nice smile, this was the best that I got. I guess playing with bubbles with the other kids is a lot more fun than posing for pictures.

Minnie Mouse Cake

It's CAKE season again! Every year from February to June we have birthday's like crazy. By the end of summer I am "caked" out, but for now I'm excited. This Minnie Mouse Cake was for a friend. She loves Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and strawberries, so I made strawberry cake with strawberry jam filling.

Quiet Book

This is something I've been wanting to make for over 5 years. For some reason I've just never gotten around to doing it. I searched the internet for some ideas, borrowed a few and came up with a few of my own. I'll eventually be making a girl version for my daughter because I always like them to have matching things. Here's my first quiet book!

The alligator has a zipper mouth so he can eat the bird, turtle, and fish.

These barn animals are finger puppets, they can be taken out of the barn to play. The birds, snail, and catterpillar can be taken out of the tree too.

Here we've got an envelope that buttons closed. It's filled with tick-tack-toe pieces. Also a shoe to learn lacing and tying. The robot is just there to be cute.

Like I said before I looked up pictures of quiet books and borrowed a few idea's (the tick-tack-toe game and barn puppets), but this page and the alligator page were my own design. Alien puppets and their spaceship.

Baby Gift

My cousin and his wife just had a baby girl! I've always wanted to make a little tu-tu and this was my chance. So I put an hippo iron-on applique on a onesie, and cut strips of tulle for the tu-tu. A stretchy headband to match and I can just see her cute little face all dressed up!

Fall Wedding Cake & Thanksgiving Cupcakes

Back in October I made this wedding cake for some friends from church. Three tier yellow cake with vanilla filling, my favorite.

Here are the bride and groom on their happy day!

These pumpkin cupcakes I made for our Thanksgiving celebration. They were so yummy and easy to make. All you do is make a regular yellow cake mix, but replace the water with pumpkin.

Christmas Presents 2010

We're having a super hero Christmas this year. One cape turned into four, and now my daughter wants one too! So we've got Super Drew, a sun, lightning, and Batman!

Next, a pretty box for my niece. This was a really fun project.

I took a Christmas nesting box, similar to these.

Spray painted the inside red, and the outside black. Then hot glued the ribbon and buttons on. Very simple and easy to do. Not counting drying time for the paint it took me about 30 min. to make.

This purse is for my other niece. I made her one last year without realizing how "Nancy Drew" she is. She is always prepared with a flashlight, toothpicks, nail clippers, and anything else she might need. Last years purse is just too small and always overflowing. So this year she's getting a bigger one.

Halloween '10

Brown Carseat Cover

This is a carseat cover for a friend. It looks a little big because it's a Britax cover on my Graco seat. That was the only way I could take a picture of it. While I was working on this my son came over and said "OOOoooo chocolate tree's!"

It has orange bias tape all around the edge too, holding the elastic.

Reception Cake

My Cousin's getting married next month in New York, and since a lot of the family wont be able to make it to the wedding, they had a reception here too!

I got to make their cake! I'm honored that this was basically their wedding cake. The venue for the wedding is a Sunday brunch and includes all kinds of deserts, so they are not having a cake.

The happy couple met while walking their dogs so I added a few paw prints in their honor.

This was my first three tier cake and I was a little nervous about it, but it was actually a lot easier than I thought. The cake turned out fine and everyone loved it.

My Sister's birthday present.

I started this quilt over a year ago, for her 17th birthday. Then I got pregnant, and bored of it. I decided I would work on it and give it to her for Christmas... but I didn't. So when it came time for her 18th birthday I had to finish it! The color scheme inspired the theme for her birthday cake and the rest of the party decorations. Now I have a lot to live up to when my youngest sister turns 18!

Classic Pooh Stuff

If you don't already know I love Classic Pooh stuff! My son's room is decorated all in Classic Pooh, and we have stuffed animals and toys and other various things I've made. Every time I find some Classic Pooh fabric I get a bunch of it so I can make things as inspiration hits me. Here are the one's I made this week.

Crinkly Baby Paper in 10 minutes!

My son loves to play with plastic bags, and although I know I have to take it away

I feel bad since he enjoys it so much.

So I made some crinkly "paper" that he can chew on and play with without the risk.

I gave him the "paper" and he smiled and put in straight into his mouth! Success!

We went outside for a picture of the slobbery fun, and this is what I got. I guess the sky and trees are more interesting than I thought.

Then I decided maybe the porch would have fewer distractions. I was wrong.

So despite my efforts to get a nice picture here it is.

* All I did was cut two rectangles of fabric, in this case I used guitar print flannel and brown cotton.

* Empty a bag of cereal and use the plastic bag for the crinkle sound. Cut a rectangle the same size as your fabric.

* Layer them plastic first, fabric 1 right side up, fabric 2 right side down.

* Sew around the edge leaving a small opening for turning.

* Turn right side out and sew the opening closed.

It turned out great! Thin and flexible, and makes a nice loud crinkle that my son loves!

They tend to create fuz, and snag on things.

Then came the matching "no-sew" flowers.

Since she shares her room with her brother, we cannot continue with curtains and tulle like I wanted. There needs to be some boy things still.

Spiderman cake

I've been trying to decide all day if I should even put this cake on here. I'm not at all happy with how it turned out. I had such issues with the frosting for some reason.

I don't know if it was the heat, or if I didn't follow my frosting recipe correctly. The frosting was cracking and lumping and not spreading nicely. You can kinda tell from the picture, but by the next morning it was a lot worse. The sides are all lumpy from the frosting sliding down the side of the cake. Anyhow, here it is...

Mother's Day Fabric Flowers

Here's my version of the No-Sew Flower.

I made a few on the wooden dowels like in the tutorial I followed. You may remmember this fabric from my new couch pillows. My daughter fell in love with the pillows and wants them to go on her bed. So I'm making her a matching quilt. After I cut out all the quilt squares I had some extra and decided to make some flowers to decorate her room and match her bedding.

Then I came up with the idea to make some on pencils for all the mother's in my family!

Blue-Stripe Carseat Cover

I made a new carseat cover for my son. The other one was my first cover and I didn't put enough padding in it. Also I used plain cotton and it was already starting to wear thru in a few places. So this time I got nicer fabric and used better batting.

The second time around was much smoother and the cover turned out much nicer than the first one.

My little girl will be starting school in a couple months so we went shopping for some new clothes. I decided that if she has new clothes she needs some new bows to match. So this time I actually decided to google "how to make hair bows" and make them the right way. I found this great site with tons of tutorials on different kinds of bows.

They are real easy to make, and addicting. I want to buy some more ribbon and keep going!

Baseball hat

All the hats I've seen are way too big, even if they say "newborn" they really aren't. Even on the pattern I used the smallest size was for an 18" head. My son's head measured only 15". I had to take the pattern in quite a bit so that it would fit him and cover up that little bald head from the sun.

I used part of a pattern that I had for the top of the dress only, then cut out the skirt and belt to fit her measurments. If you have an old dress to use as a guide I think's it's actually easier to make up your own pattern.

Pink and blue sibling shirts for my kiddos. These were all white shirts to begin with and I dyed them with Rit Dye. Then I added the writing using the Freezer Paper method.

I was surprised at how easy dying fabric is, now I'm wondering why I haven't been dying things all along. I did it in my washing machine, but there's also a great tutorial on dying things in your sink on MADE.

I made my husband go through his closet and get rid of some of his clothes he didn't ever wear. This outfit was made from one of the shirts he pulled out. I cut it up and added an Eeyore picture to the front, and Tigger and Pooh to the feet.

Every little girl needs a pettiskirt, and my little girl is as girly as they come. You wont catch her in shorts... ever, it's a skirt or nothing. But if your going to wear a frilly skirt, you need a frilly shirt to go with it.

The shirt is re-made from a stained t-shirt I had, since she's small I was able to cut off the stain and use the rest of the material. The ballerina is painted on, and her skirt is made from the same chiffon I used to make the pettiskirt.

Pooh Bear Baby Blanket

This blakent goes along with my satin obsession. Classic Pooh fleece on one side and white satin on the other, add some satin blanket binding and it's done!

So nice and soft, perfect for any baby's skin. This one is a gift for my cousin who's expecting.

New sling idea

My new obsession is satin. Here in Southern California it's hot most of the year so I thought I'd try out a new idea. Satin on the inside of a sling to keep baby cool in the heat.

Hair accessories!

When your bored it's always good to look thru your stash you never know what you can create from some stuff you already have. These clips were a late night project a mixture of ribbons and buttons, hot glued onto a hair clip.

It's finally winter around here and my girly-girl would not be complete without some pink.

I made this sweatshirt from some double sided knit. It's not super warm, but it doesn't get that cold around here anyway.

I added some cupcake patches to the front to make it cute and fun.

Here's a little glimpse of what I've been working on for the past 6 weeks. I co-costumed this show with another woman. I didn't make all the costumes, some we already had, and some she made. This scene is all the women gossiping about Mary being pregnant and unwed.

Shyla is having a LadyBug party! Here's her chocolate cake with buttercream grass and fondant lady bugs. I'm pleased with how this one turned out, and I'm thrilled to have finally gotten the hang of spacing my words better. This time my "Happy Birthday" is perfectly centered!

Nursing pillow covers, and burp rags

This was a baby shower gift for my friend Andrea who's due in a couple weeks! A boppy cover, cotton on one side and brown fleece on the other. That way if it's cold she can use the fleece side, and if it's hot she can use the cotton side.

Another boppy cover, this time with cotton on both sides, for summer time.

And three matching burp rags! The spotted one's have terry on the back, and the other one has brown fleece.

Well, we found out we're having a BOY! So now I have a bunch of girl stuff I don't need. It's all free, so just let me know if you want something!

This outfit I never got around to finishing, I'll attatch the elastic on the shoes before sending it off. And the small bow was going to be a headband, I'll finish that up too. This is a 6 month size, the back of the dress has elastic so it would probably go up to a 9 month. The shoes are just under 4 inches.

Tinker Bell!

My first Halloween costume of the year! This one is for my sling model Kalyn. It's the same costume I made for my daughter 4 years ago, this time I found some sparkley fabric for the leaves and sleeves. You can't really see it but all those circles are sparkley in the light.

The back has elastic so it will last a little longer if she wants to wear it for Disneyland trips too.

And the wings are attatched so they can't fall off or get lost.

Some little Tinker Bell shoes to match and her costume is complete!

Rainbow Quilt

I love quilts and when I see a finished quilt I always think, "that would be so fun to make." But then when I start working on one I remember why I never make quilts. I don't like how long they take, and I don't know how to quilt them the right way. I just go along the lines, so they never end up looking as fancy as they sould. I saw this picture and was inspired to make this rainbow quilt, I used much bigger squares, 8 in. instead of 5 in., and did the pattern going down instead of across. It's going to be our park blanket for sitting on the grass. If you look in the bottom right corner of my picture you can see my son trying to climb into his obstructed bed. He thought I had made him a tent... which wouldn't be a bad idea for my next project.

From the picture the orange and blue look like solids, but actually the orange has small white polka dots, and the blue has a darker blue flower design. The quilt back and binding are a very colorful butterfly print. I thought it went well with the rainbow theme.

I've been working on this quilt off and on for about a month and a half. Finally this week I decided I needed to buckle down and finish it. My husband's band is playing at the park tonight so that was my motivation to get this quilt finished so we can used it tonight.

Burp Rags

I've never really liked the idea of making burp rags because they are just going to get puked on, but then I remembered using some store bought burp rags and they were so thin that the spit up soaked through onto my shirt. So I decided to give it a go. The front is cotton and the back is a super soft chenille type fabric. I decided to use the chenille to make them more absorbent.

I used some left over fabric I had in my closet and only had enough to make three.

These turned out so great and they were so quick to make I'll be making more of these in the future, just as soon as I find out if the baby is a boy or a girl.

Flowered headband

Here's one of my favorite pictures I've taken. The only thing I made is the headband. I bought some fake flowers from the 99 cent store and took them off their stems. Then hot glued them to a fabric covered headband (if you use a plastic headband the glue will eventually peel off.) Then I added a small jewell to the center of each flower to make it sparkle more.

Little House on the Prairie Dress

I made this dress for my daughter, because she has outgrown most of her other costumes. I looked around for patterns I liked, and the only one that included a hat pattern was $15! I hate paying money for patterns, so I just made up my own pattern as I went. I tried to talk my daughter out of getting pink fabric, I thought green would be nice. But pink is what she likes.

Riley is turning one! His mother requested a Chicken Little cake for the party.

It's chocolate cake with strawberry filling and buttercream icing. And a small one just for Riley to dig into!

Using buttercream icing I drew the design on wax paper and froze it. Then when the cake was ready I layed the image on the cake and peeled off the wax paper. I love how they turned out!

Pirate Treasure Map

My husband helped me stain this treasure box for the kids months ago and I filled it full of plastic jewels. Well, I found this great fabric and made a treasure map! My kids ran around the house searching for treasure for most of the day.

My very own Cake Wreck

Ok, so there are several factors that led up to my cake wreck.

* First it's been over 100 degrees every day for a month, and I really didn't want to turn on the oven and heat up my house even more.

* Second I've been sick as a dog for the past few weeks ever since I found out I was pregnant, and the thought of eating cake was less than appetizing.

* Third I just plain wasn't excited about making a cake with chocolate frosting.

I personally don't like chocolate, plus you can't color the frosting and make it pretty. So because of these reasons I was lazy and.... bought frosting.... eeek. Here's a warning to those of you who may not know, store bought frosting is no good! Take the extra 10 minutes and make some yourself it's defiantly worth it. I decided to make a fresh strawberry filling, because it's summer and I love strawberries. Also for those of you who may not know, if you're going to use a berry or any thin filling you need to make a dam of frosting around your bottom cake layer. Just put some frosting in a zip-lock and cut off the corner. Then squeeze a thick line of frosting around your cake. Then put your filling inside the dam that way it can't leak out the sides of the cake. Ok so I did all that and added my top layer. This is what I ended up with!

A leaky mess. This is why you must MAKE your own frosting! The frosting I bought was not a good thick crusting frosting, and therefore did not hold my strawberry filling in place. I tried to salvage the cake by refrigerating it then adding another layer of frosting, it still leaked. So I tried one more layer of frosting, and I think it'll be passable. I still ended up with a couple leaky spots but whatever. Just to clarify the only reason I decided to go ahead and be lazy with this cake was because it's for my sister and I know she wont care, and I'm not getting paid for it, and it's just going to be devoured by my kids and my mom so it really didn't matter.

My daughter helped me add sprinkles to the top, and we're all ready to party! Click here if you want to see some more Cake Wrecks.

My friend is having another boy and wanted a nursing cover and sling. She picked out her material and I made them for her. Here's the nursing cover, I made it double sided.

I also made the sling double sided, with a loop on the front to attatch a pacifier or a toy.
And I ended up with a lot of fabric left over, so I decided to make her a diaper bag too!
